Dau Hu Sot Ca Chua Tofu in Tomato Sauce

Golden fried tofu simmered in a quick, garlicky fresh tomato sauce, an everyday Vietnamese family dinner.

  • Serves 4
  • Active 25 min
  • Total 30 min
  • Mains

Ingredients

  • 14 oz firm tofu, cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil, divided
  • 2 shallots, minced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 medium ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • Steamed rice, for serving

Method

  1. Pat the tofu dry and fry it in 2 tablespoons oil over medium-high heat, turning, until golden on most sides, about 8 minutes; set aside.
  2. Add the remaining oil and cook the shallots and garlic until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  3. Add the tomatoes and tomato paste and cook, mashing, until they break down into a chunky sauce, about 6 minutes.
  4. Stir in the soy sauce, sugar and water, return the tofu and simmer 5 minutes so it soaks up the sauce.
  5. Season with salt and pepper, scatter green onions and serve with rice.

Notes

Use gluten-free tamari instead of soy sauce for guests who avoid gluten.
